- The breakup of the Soviet bloc required a name change, but the geographic focus of the JOURNAL OF SLAVIC MILITARY STUDIES remains the same: Central and Eastern Europe and the states of the former Soviet Union. The five to seven research articles stress both current issues and problems facing the military culture of the former Warsaw Pact allies with the re-establishment of economic and military ties (through OECD and NATO membership) with the Western democracies. The fall of the Soviet Union has resulted in different missions, new enemies, and new strategic issues to explore for both Cold War superpowers (Katz).
